Confessing | 1 John 1:5-10

Rhythms of Grace: Spiritual Discipline of Confessing 1 John 1:5-10 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Sermon Notes: Main Idea: Confessing Sin Is Part of Living in Light I. Origin of Living in Light: Fellowship with God II. Implication of Living in Light: No Longer Walk in Sin III. Implication of Living in Light: We Are Honest about Our Sin VI. Implication of Living in Light: We Fellowship with One Another V. Implication of Living in Light: We Have Our Sins Cleansed VI. Result of Living in Light: Our Joy Application Questions: 1. If you’re living in the light, you’re honest about sin and confession. Are you honest about your sin and confessing it? Do you have a brother or sister in the church you can confess and pray with? 2. Discuss the 3 reasons Pastor Blaine gave for confessing sin: - It keeps us honest. - It takes sin and puts it in the aim of Christ’s light (Ephesians 5:11-14). - It releases a weight from us (Psalm 32:3-5). 3. True joy is found in a life lived for Christ. God wants us to live a life of confession and repentance to have a truly joyful life. How can we begin to shift our culture at DBC toward confession and repentance?
