Titus 1:10-16 | Oil For The Head

Pastor Blaine Boyd continues in the book of Titus, expositing a passage about lovingly rebuking as a response to spiritual sickness. Titus 1:10-16 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work. Sermon Notes: Main Idea: Rebuke is a Loving Response to Spiritual Sickness I. The Root of False Teaching is Unbelief II. The Risk of False Teaching is Death III.The Response to False Teaching is Rebuke Discussion Questions: 1. Pastor Blaine said that the root of false teaching in unbelief. What does this mean? Why is correct theology and doctrine so important? What is the gospel? 2. Pastor Blaine mentioned 3 different “tiers” for viewing theological doctrine. What are some examples of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tier doctrines? Which level needs rebuking if in error? 3. According to Paul in Titus 1:10-16, why must false doctrine be rebuked? Who are the ones who are to rebuke false doctrine? How is this to be done? (See Eph. 4:11-15).
