Matthew 12:33-50 | Something Greater

โ€ข Blaine Boyd โ€ข Series: The King & The Cross

Pastor Blaine wraps up Matthew 12, bringing a powerful message about how true salvation begins with a Matthew 12:33-50 โ€œEither make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.โ€ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, โ€œTeacher, we wish to see a sign from you.โ€ But he answered them, โ€œAn evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. โ€œWhen the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, โ€˜I will return to my house from which I came.โ€™ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.โ€ While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, โ€œWho is my mother, and who are my brothers?โ€ And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, โ€œHere are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.โ€ Sermon Notes: Main Idea: A Heart Change is Necessary for Salvation I. Words Expose the Condition of Our Heart II. Signs Will Not Change an Unbelieving Heart III. Evil Will Commandeer an Empty Heart IV. Jesus Identifies with an Obedient Heart Reflection & Discussion: Ask yourself these questions-- What does my fruit say about me? Am I growing in the production of good fruit? Do I see tangible evidence of daily reflecting God's love, beauty, and righteousness?
