Matthew 5:13-20 | City on a Hill

 • Blaine Boyd • Series: The King & The Cross

Pastor Blaine continues preaching in Matthew 5, showing how the Church displaying righteousness brings blessing to the world and is fundamental to following Jesus. Matthew 5:13-20 "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Sermon Notes: Main Idea: Displaying Righteousness Is Fundamental to Following Jesus I. Our Righteousness Must Bless the World II. Our Righteousness Must Aim to Glorify God III. Our Righteousness Must Surpass the Law IV. Our Righteousness Must Begins with Christ Discussion Questions: 1. Displaying righteousness is fundamental to following Jesus. What does “righteousness” mean? How have you seen this done poorly? How have you seen this done well? How can we be better at displaying righteousness? 2. Our righteousness must bless the world. We are God’s goodness and blessing to the world (Matthew 5:13). How should we apply Matthew 5:13 to our daily lives? Are you salty? 3. Our righteousness must aim to glorify God. Why is this important to keep in mind? How is this worked out in your daily life?
