Matthew 8:18-22 | Kingdom First

 • Blaine Boyd • Series: The King & The Cross

Pastor Blaine continues preaching through Matthew 8, challenging the church to sacrifice comfort to follow Christ and prioritize devotion to Him over all other things. Matthew 8:18-22 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.” Sermon Notes: Main Idea: We Are Jesus First People I. Prerequisite 1: Willingness to Sacrifice Comfort for Christ II. Prerequisite 2: Willingness to Prioritize Devotion to Christ Discussion Questions: 1. Are we Jesus first followers of Christ? What are things we’re tempted to put before Jesus? How do we keep our focus on Christ in our daily lives? 2. Are we willing to sacrifice comfort for Christ? How does Jesus display laying aside comforts? How about the lives of the disciples and Paul? Do you know Christians who have sacrificed comforts in order to follow Christ? Do you think they would say it’s worth the sacrifice? How does the eternal vs the temporal help us to see the worthiness of sacrifice in this life? 3. Some take-aways to discuss: A.) Prioritize the mission of Jesus Christ by preaching and sharing the gospel. B.) Prioritize and love the local church. C.) Prioritize our goals towards Jesus’ priorities for us as a body and individuals.
